A Brief Introduction To Shannan Area and Tsedang City

Shannan, covering an area of 79'000 km in the middle reaches of Yurlong Tsangpu River and south to Mountan Nyancheng Tanghla is the cradle place of Tibet civilization. The yearly average temperature is between 7¡æ£­£¹¡æ. The average altitude is 3700 meters but her capital named Tsedang is only 3500 meter above sea level.  There are a lot of historical interests surrounding Tsedang of which Samye Monastery, Mindroling and Trunduk monasteries, and the first palace in Tibet shown below named Yongbulakang are all famous.

Lamna Tso Lake

Lamna Tso, meaning "numinous mother lake" in Tibetan, has an area of one square kilometers located in Gyacha County of Shannan Prefecture. It takes a head bones skeleton shape like a mirror and is surrounded by mountains as high as 5100 meters. It is said that people can see their former life and future life from it. Successive Dalai Lama would go there once in a life and their reincarnation could be found after seen in the ake.

Yombulagang  Palace

In Nedong County,eight kilometers to the south of Zetang Town,it is the first palace in Tibetan history. It was said that the palace was built in the second century B.C.by the first king Nyatri Tsanpo. It houses the statues of the thee-world Buddhas and Tsanpos of various historical stages including Nyatri Tsanpo, Lhatu Turi Niantsan ,  Rabajin , Songtsan Gambo and Trisong Detsen.

Samyae Monastery

On the northern bank of the Yarlung Zambo River in Chanang County, Shannan Prefecture, the monastery was built in 779 under the supervision of Master Padmasambhava and Tibetan king Trisong Detsen. It is the first Monastery for the monks in Tibet. It houses many statues and murals as well as tablets marking the development of Buddhism. All these are valuable cultural relics.

Changzhug Monastery

anding by the highway on the east bank of the Yalong River in Nedong County, Shannan Prefecture, this monastery was built in the seventh century and has been repaired in various historical periods. A legend says after Songtsan Gambo established its capital inLhasa, he came and stayed here together with Princess Wen Cheng who planted the willow trees around the monastery. The  monastery horses a precious Thangka picture of a Buddha inlaid with pearls and gems.

Brief Introduction To Some Other Monasteries

Samding Monastery: located to the south of Yamdrok Tso in Langkatse County, was founded by Shangpa sect of Gejupa sects. It has a very special  position in Tibetan Buddhism due to its female living Buddha while male as monks in the monastery.

Mindroling Monastery: was built in the late 10th century and had its current name when it was rebuilt in 1667. It is one of the three great monasteries in Rnyingma Sect. The monastery has paid attention to the research of Buddhist classics, astronomical calendar, calligraphy rhetoric and Tibetan medicines and is famous for its achievements in theses fields. Over the years the recommendation of the "Chronology of the Tibetan Calendar" has been formulated by the monastery, and it is famous as the first academy of Lamaism in Tibet.
